An estimated five million visitors viewed 'The Poppies' at the Tower of London as part of the commemoration of the war's centenary in 2014.

An estimated five million visitors viewed 'The Poppies' at the Tower of London as part of the commemoration of the war's centenary in 2014.

Stage designer Tom Piper created the setting for the installation at the Tower and from 17 July 2014 the poppies were added progressively by volunteers . . .

Each poppy represented the life lost of a British or Commonwealth soldier during the war.

The poppies were all hand made by a team of 300 people working with the artist Paul Cummins who designed and created the installation. The final poppy being placed by military cadet Harry Hayes on Armistice Day - 11th November 2014.

Each of the poppies was sold by pre-order and following the commemoration 8,000 volunteers removed and despatched them. Proceeds from the sale, estimated at £15 million, went to six service charities.
